Glossary
bps (Bits per Second)
A measure of data transmission speeds, the amount of bits transferred in a single second. Typically, speeds are measured in kbps (1000 bits per second). Note: kBps (with a capital B) denotes bytes per second.
Bandwidth
Bandwidth is used to measure the data throughput of a channel or connection. It's the amount of data that can be sent over a connection in a given amount of time without distortion.
Browser
A piece of software that allows the user to access Internet sites.
Download
The process of transferring data from a hosted server down to a local computer or connected device through the internet. When you copy a file from a website on the internet to your computer or connected device you are now "downloading" that file.
Encode
The process of compressing and converting audio and video to meet proper formats and specifications for recording and playback
Encoding Options
The number of speeds and file formats available for encoding.
Formats
The compression method (algorithm) used to create a video stream.
GB (Gigabyte)
A Gigabyte is a measurement for file size. 1GB is equal to approximately 1 billion bytes or exactly 1024 MB.
Interface
Interface is an interchangeable term for video player.
IP address
IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique identifier for any computer or device that is on the internet.
Live Streaming
Capturing, encoding, and hosting a live event, such as a concert, award show, meeting, or conference, usually from a remote location, for Internet broadcast on a one-time or limited basis. Live events usually require establishing an Internet connection and/or satellite uplinks for streaming over the Internet. Live events can also be archived for viewing on demand.
MB (Megabyte)
A unit of digital information equal to 1,048,576 bytes or 1024 kilobytes.
RAM (Random-Access Memory)
This is the memory where the software resides while it is running along with the data it is using. RAM is used by both OS and application software. RAM is very fast but volatile, meaning that all information is lost when electric power is cut off. That makes it useful for temporary storage of data that requires fast access. Normally, devices with RAM also have another type of storage memory (flash memory or a hard drive) that stores the information while the power is off. Devices with more RAM can run more complex software and multiple applications at the same time.
SMB
Small to Medium Sized Businesses
Speeds
The rate of bandwidth when sending or delivering data.
Streaming Media/Video
Streaming allows the user to watch or listen to a media file without downloading it. The file is simultaneously "streamed" to the user as he or she is watching or listening to it. The user needs a player to view or listen to the files - files must be decompressed by a media player that is compatible with the format of the file.
Upload
The process of transferring data from a local computer or connected device up to a hosted server through the internet. When you copy a file from your computer or connected device and publish it through the internet you are now "uploading" that file.
